I have a few sites that have AdSense ads on them, and they normally pull in about $10 per day. It’s not amazing, but it’s at least a free daily lunch and beer! But over the last week I’ve noticed my revenue increase to about $20/day.
Did I change the placement? Did I optimize my sites? Did I switch the type of ads I’m running? Nope!
I’ve done nothing, and my revenue has doubled. My hunch is that this is due to the competition over the holidays. This is prime buying season! People are searching for gifts, so people are paying more for clicks. Since Google gives us a percentage of the click bid, the increase gets passed right on to us.
Never start a new Google AdWords PPC campaign during December
This brings up an important realization – Never start a new Google AdWords PPC campaign during December. You’ll be competing against bids that have been temporarily inflated, making your campaign unprofitable. You PPC campaign may work at the price of $1/click. But at $2/click you could be eating into your profit. Wait until after the new year to start a new campaign.
I made the mistake of doing this last year during my database site, and it could be more successful than I thought (to be discussed in a future blog post). I’ll be trying it again, and of course reporting the results with you!
What about you – have you seen an increase in AdSense revenue (or inflated AdWords bids) during this month?
