AdSense Revenue Doubled in December! (or, Never Start a PPC Campaign During the Holidays!)

Shane Labs December 13, 2013 8

I have a few sites that have AdSense ads on them, and they normally pull in about $10 per day. It’s not amazing, but it’s at least a free daily lunch and beer! But over the last week I’ve noticed my revenue increase to about $20/day.

AdSense in December

My revenue has doubled in December so far – due to the holiday competition?

Did I change the placement? Did I optimize my sites? Did I switch the type of ads I’m running? Nope!

I’ve done nothing, and my revenue has doubled. My hunch is that this is due to the competition over the holidays. This is prime buying season! People are searching for gifts, so people are paying more for clicks. Since Google gives us a percentage of the click bid, the increase gets passed right on to us.

Never start a new Google AdWords PPC campaign during December

This brings up an important realization – Never start a new Google AdWords PPC campaign during December. You’ll be competing against bids that have been temporarily inflated, making your campaign unprofitable. You PPC campaign may work at the price of $1/click. But at $2/click you could be eating into your profit. Wait until after the new year to start a new campaign.

I made the mistake of doing this last year during my database site, and it could be more successful than I thought (to be discussed in a future blog post). I’ll be trying it again, and of course reporting the results with you!

What about you – have you seen an increase in AdSense revenue (or inflated AdWords bids) during this month?

Is the adsense chart for one site or all sites in your account?

Hi Chris – the graph is for my whole account, but upon further inspection I realized it’s mainly just 1 site that has had the increase. It’s a niche site about jewelry, which is probably a hot topic around the holidays. During the last two weeks it has brought in $145 in revenue, while it normally brings in $50 in a two week period.

Yeah, I actually saw a very big increase with my revenue this month.
I guess next month will be a pain comparing to this month 🙂

Quarter four is ALWAYS a big boost from the previous – I typically see increases in quarters 2, 3, and 4 with a small drop in 1. My account rep at Google has told me that most accounts she is familiar with are on the up this quarter.

I noticed this as well and was wondering what the increase was from. I usually average around 30 on the weekdays but this month I’ve had days that hit over 50. I’m loving this!

It’s the holidays. Ads are supply and demand. Right now advertisers are in competition with each other to get their ads on your site.

Unfortunately, you’ll probably see a rate crash on 12/26. Q4 has always been big with ad agencies as they are looking to dump as much of their spend while the traffic is ripe.

New budgets aren’t approved until the first of the year, then spending will be cautious across most markets. Gradually, rates will increase over the year again.

But a doubled rate, that’s pretty good, sir.

Good to know, D.T. I’ll post an update in a few days talking about when/if the increase ends. Thanks!
