February 2015 Profit Report: $619

Shane Labs March 9, 2015 2

Okay, I feel like I’m seriously going bananas. Do you remember last month when I talked about retiring AmpedSense and continuing to push hard on marketing HostBenchmarker? Well, no matter how much time and effort I spend on these two side projects, the results are opposite what I expect.

Last month I spent 0 (zero!) time working on AmpedSense, and guess what? It had its most profitable month: $296 in sales. Saweet! And HostBenchmarker – almost every spare moment between changing diapers and how many affiliate referrals did I get? Zero. Zilch! Nada!

This just doesn’t make sense to me. Shouldn’t my profit be a reflection of what side project I’ve decided to focus on? Apparently not. I mean, I just had my most profitable month to date and it happened by ignoring my most successful side project.

Ya know what’s even crazier? In the time that I spent just now, writing these opening paragraphs, I just sold another copy of AmpedSense. There’s another $79. This just doesn’t make any sense, I’m going insane!

Perhaps the lesson here is I can’t choose what’s going be a hit or not. In all my side projects, I need to exercise patience and learn to go with the flow. Maybe one month one project is going to gain momentum while the next month it’s going to lose steam and be replaced by another. I guess that’s the beauty of having multiple side projects: you never know what’s going to work and it’s better not to have all your eggs in one basket. Could my inability to focus be a good thing? Only time will tell.

Anyway, best month to date. Let’s look at the numbers:

Compared to last month, visitors are down a bit (-5k), but profit up by almost $200. Awesome 🙂

This next month I’m going to be thinking hard about whether or not I should continue HostBenchmarker. Perhaps once I give up on it it will start to become profitable, ha! Well, I can hope. But HostBenchmarker is a bit different because it has enormous expenses. Almost $100 every month going to waste, and in a few months I’ll have to renew many year long contracts that will add another few hundred bucks to the loss.

Stay tuned to see how HostBenchmarker performs in its possible final month!

By the way, did you see my most recent sidestrapper profile: How Namevine makes $275 per month. Let me know if you want more of these, or if you’d like your side project to be featured. I’m always looking for stories to share!

Thanks Aaron! It’s about 1/2 ad revenue, 1/2 sales of my own products. I’ve been trying to get some affiliate revenue too but that’s not working out too much 🙁 if you want more details I post a breakdown of all my numbers in my newsletter (can subscribe on the right).
